Every educator shares a core mission: to ensure that every single young person, regardless of their background or ability, feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. True inclusion means more than just welcoming diverse learners into a space; it means actively removing the barriers to their participation and ensuring they have equal access to life-changing opportunities.
When we intentionally build a sense of belonging and support personal development, we don't just help students keep themselves mentally healthy - we equip them with the confidence, resilience and readiness to thrive in whatever comes next.
In the second of our Accelerator webinar series, we focused on driving inclusive practice and boosting social mobility for vulnerable learners. Here are the key takeaways for schools and colleges looking to build a structured, inclusion-first approach to skill development.
Key takeaways for driving inclusive practice
- The reality of the challenge: Social mobility and youth employment are at the center of a vital national conversation. In the UK, the number of young people aged 16–24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET) has reached nearly one million. While this transition is challenging for anyone, individuals with SEND are 170% more likely to become NEET, and the risk more than doubles for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with low qualifications.
- Data-driven impact for vulnerable learners: Essential skills are a proven, powerful lever for turning these statistics around. Research shows that individuals with higher levels of essential skills are up to 50% less likely to become NEET. Crucially, strong essential skills can even mitigate lower levels of academic achievement, serving as a vital safety net for future life satisfaction and higher earnings.
- A measurable approach to personal development: Helping a pupil become prepared for life beyond school can feel difficult to track. The Universal Framework shifts this from an abstract concept into a concrete roadmap of measurable progress. Learners can make clear, demonstrable steps in core areas like Listening, Communication, Problem Solving, and Planning.
- A universal language for all profiles: By breaking skill development down into 16 distinct, teachable steps, we create a shared language that bridges the gap between the classroom and the workplace. For learners with additional needs, those not working at age-related expectations, or individuals with varied learning profiles, we break down each skill step into three Building Blocks focusing on what the step is about, why it is important and how to put it into practice. . This tailored approach ensures that when a whole step feels like too big a leap, progress is broken down into accessible, bite-sized milestones.
- Empowering educators with inclusion-first design: Teachers shouldn't have to guess how to adapt these concepts. We provide the pedagogical building blocks and an evolving suite of engaging, highly visual resources. This gives educators the confidence to teach skills explicitly for adaptive teaching, so you can capture and celebrate progress that might otherwise go unnoticed by traditional academic tracking.
