Accelerator for Secondary Schools

2026-27

The Skills Builder Accelerator is our flagship programme for secondary schools. Join a national movement of over 1,100 schools and colleges already using the Universal Framework to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace. We provide the rigorous, evidence-based structure you need to meet upcoming educational reforms with confidence.

By nominating a ‘Skills Leader’ and a member of your Senior Leadership Team to lead this initiative, you’ll develop a high impact, data-led strategy for student success.

This partnership ensures your school is ready for the new Ofsted accountability measures and curriculum shifts in areas such as oracy, work experience and enrichment by providing a clear, evidence based structure to measure and prove student progress.

"Our curriculum must bring together knowledge and skills into a powerful partnership for learning... delivering a curriculum that is rich in knowledge and strong in skills."

– Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, Curriculum and Assessment Review Launch (July 2024)

Could you be eligible for funding?

We fundraise over £500,000 to create 200 fully-funded places on the Accelerator each year. Anyone can apply to join the programme, and you might be eligible to apply for a funded place.

What is the Accelerator programme?

The Accelerator is a year-long strategic partnership designed to embed a consistent, professional approach to essential skills from Key Stage Three through to Sixth Form.

By the end of the first year, you will have:

  • Strategic leadership - a trained ‘Skills Leader’ equipped to drive and sustain school-wide change.
  • A consistent standard - a shared language for essential skills across KS3, KS4, and Post-16, creating a cohesive journey for every student.
  • Measurable progress - robust data to support Personal Development, inclusion reporting and Gatsby Benchmarks.
  • National recognition - a Skills Builder Award, showcasing your school’s commitment to excellence and student outcomes to parents, employers and inspectors.

How the Accelerator programme works

As part of a selected cohort of UK secondary schools, you will work alongside a dedicated Skills Builder Education Associate to translate national guidance into a manageable, whole school strategy.

This partnership provides 1:1 expert support from a qualified teacher, alongside full access to our curriculum and assessment model. By combining specialist staff training with peer learning opportunities, we ensure your team can confidently track every student’s progress against a proven national standard - without adding to teacher workload.

What could you do on an Accelerator programme?

The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to align the Universal Framework with your specific 2026-27 goals.

You might use the programme to:

  • Strengthen curriculum design - align departmental plan and enrichment programmes with the Universal Framework to ensure a cohesive, school-wide strategy for learning.
  • Meet Gatsby Benchmarks - seamlessly integrate essential skills into your approach to careers-related learning.
  • Support Work Experience - help students articulate their strengths during work experience programmes and interviews.
  • Embed oracy and communication - use the Framework to provide a measurable approach to oracy, preparing students for the communication demands of university and apprenticeships.
  • Drive inclusion and wellbeing - use our assessment tools to provide quantifiable evidence of progress for all learners, ensuring those with additional needs are equipped with the independence skills they need for life after school.

Students on an Accelerator Programme make twice the progress building their essential employability skills.

A horizontal bar chart displaying steps of progress made within a year in different settings. Schools without a Skills Builder programme can hope to achieve 0.57 steps of progress on average. Schools using our Digital Resources can achieve 1.38 steps. And Schools on the Accelerator programme can look forward to achieving an average of 1.52 steps of progress a year.

It is, at heart, an inspiring concept that prompts better practice and therefore student outcomes.

Careers Leader

I'm developing a bespoke strategy that is manageable but also has impact - best of both worlds!

It wasn’t until we really started the programme that we realised it’s what we’ve always been looking for.

Skills Leader

The programme can really tap into some of those talents,  aptitudes and skills that we may not see in the delivery of the regular curriculum.

Headteacher

The Skills Leader training has been very effective. The fact that we are going for an award makes us focus more and put actions in place to achieve.
