Accelerator for Specialist Settings

2026-27

The Skills Builder Accelerator is our flagship programme for specialist settings. Join a national movement of over 1,100 schools and colleges already using the Universal Framework to build essential skills, providing a proven foundation for independence and life beyond school.

By nominating a ‘Skills Leader’ and a member of your Senior Leadership Team to lead this initiative, you’ll develop a complete, data-led strategy that bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.

This partnership ensures your setting is ready for the new Ofsted accountability measures and curriculum shifts in areas such as Personal Development, accessibility and careers by providing a clear, evidence based structure to measure and prove learner progress.

What is the Accelerator programme? 

The Accelerator is a year-long strategic partnership designed to embed a consistent approach to essential skills. It is highly flexible, allowing you to focus on specific cohorts or phases before scaling at a pace that works for your staff and learners.

By the end of the first year, you will have:

  • Strategic leadership - a trained ‘Skills Leader’ equipped to drive and sustain change across your setting.
  • A consistent standard - a shared language for essential skills, adaptable across all ability levels to ensure a cohesive journey for every learner.
  • Measurable progress - robust evidence of small steps of progress to support EHCP reviews, Personal Development, and inclusion reporting.
  • National recognition - a Skills Builder Award in recognition of your schools commitment to excellence and student outcomes. 

How the Accelerator programme works 

As part of a selected cohort of UK specialist settings, you will work alongside a dedicated Skills Builder Education Associate to translate national guidance into a manageable, institution wide strategy.

This partnership provides 1:1 expert support from a qualified teacher, alongside full access to our evidence-based curriculum and assessment model. We ensure your team can confidently track every student’s progress against a proven national standard without adding to teacher workload.

What could you do on an Accelerator programme?

The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to align the Universal Framework with your specific 2026-27 goals.

You might use the programme to:

  • Support transition and independence - use our assessment tools to measure quantifiable progress in skills like Problem Solving and Adapting, ensuring learners are prepared for life after school.
  • Ensure a tailored strategy - use the Framework to develop a strategy that is bespoke to your learners’ individual needs.
  • Drive independence and resilience - use our self-management skills to provide a structured curriculum for character development and resilience, building the foundations for independent living.
  • Align curriculum and enrichment - bring together knowledge and skills into a powerful partnership by mapping the essential skills across both subject-specific plans and enrichment activities, ensuring a cohesive, setting-wide strategy.

Recognises specialist settings who model exceptional practice across the institution. All teachers will confidently integrate essential skills into daily practice

What is the Skills Builder Award?

  • The goal is to equip your learners with the essential skills they need to succeed in their next steps
  • The Skills Builder Award recognises specialist settings who are delivering high-quality essential skills education at a Bronze, Silver and Gold standard.
  • You will achieve an Award by embedding principles of best practice outlined in the Award Guide.
  • You will work closely with your Education Associate in three Planning Meetings to develop and implement a manageable, long-term plan.
  • Awards are dated for three years and reviewed annually by our team.

The Skills Builder Framework

The Skills Builder Universal Framework is the national standard for teaching essential skills. It breaks each skill into teachable steps, supporting progress for all ages and abilities - including those with special educational needs. The Universal Framework was developed by Skills Builder with the Careers and Enterprise Company, Gatsby Foundation, Business in the Community, EY Foundation, CIPD and the CBI.

The Skills Builder Principles 

Refined over a decade, the Skills Builder Principles outline best practice in teaching essential skills for learning and life. The six principles will form the basis of your strategy, and your success in embedding them will be recognised with the Skills Builder Award.
