Roots is an award-winning, community-based green recovery service that supports more than 600 people each year across Luton and Bedfordshire. Through therapeutic growing spaces, sustainability workshops, and peer-support groups, the programme offers accessible opportunities for individuals experiencing isolation or complex health challenges to rebuild their lives and develop essential skills.
Roots fosters connection, bringing people together to nurture friendships, strengthen communities, and care for the natural environment. Members grow in confidence, build new skills, and progress along their recovery journeys, whether by volunteering, finding purpose and employment, or gaining the tools to live more independently.
By providing flexible, non-clinical support and inclusive learning opportunities, Roots empowers individuals to create meaningful, lasting change for themselves and their local communities.
The Roots staff team works collaboratively with members to identify and reflect on the positive experiences gained through the project and in their everyday lives. These reflections are used to recognise and demonstrate the essential skills being developed, guided by the Skills Builder Universal Framework.
The essential skills are introduced, practised, and reinforced throughout group and one-to-one sessions, with opportunities for members to demonstrate progress and reflect on their learning.
Staff also support members in identifying the specific skills they wish to strengthen and tailor sessions accordingly, ensuring that each individual’s development journey is purposeful, responsive, and rooted in real-life application.
