This session is the second part of the Joinery Outreach from Education Outreach at Sellafield Ltd, which supports the national curriculum aspects of D&T, as well as bringing in learning of habitats and seasons. Learners will use their learning from the previous sessions to assemble a Hedgehog house. Co-delivered by STEM Ambassadors from Sellafield Ltd, Amentum, Mitie, Lakes College and Energy Coast UTC in your school this session builds on the introductory sessions and allows learners to put knowledge and skills into practice resulting in hedgehog houses that can be used around your school grounds. During this session the learners will:

  • Be able to use a range of tools – cutting, joining, shaping – use of saw, chisel and hammer
  • Understand how use equipment to perform practical task safely

The essential skills icons are included on all resources such as the workbook and presentation slides and are consistently referred to throughout the sessions. In the slide notes the facilitator explains about the vital role of essential skills for any job role as well as leading into specific steps and how they apply in the session.

The facilitator expands on why these skills are so important in the world of work/in their own job role when explaining who they are, their role and their skills.

During safety demonstrations and the explaining of the task, learners are encouraged to use the focus skill steps and at the end of the session there is a reflection sheet to capture their understanding and skill practice as well as reflection questions around the skills they used throughout the session. On the reflection sheet there is a smiley face scale to show their understanding of the skill used in the session.
