The Sellafield Ltd Early Careers programme works with Training Providers to provide a continuous pipeline of capability to feed the skills and competency requirements of the business. Core training includes: appropriate academic pathways, Essential Skills development workshops, Outward Bound activities and enrichment activities. Training and development is facilitated through a combination of provider input and bespoke workshops with staff. Line Managers, Team Leaders, Mentors and Education and Skills staff provide support throughout the schemes. If Learners meet requirements they are offered a full-time role at the end of their scheme.

At the beginning of the programme, all Learners reflect on the three essential skills using the Benchmark platform and identify which steps they will focus on. They will reflect on these throughout bespoke workshops, Outward Bounds and enrichment activities and repeat the assessment every 6 months to quantify the progress made.

Programme activity has been designed so as to achieve progress in the Skills Builder Framework steps. For example, the HLLW mission provides the opportunity to learn and develop new skills that are directly aligned to the essential skills and progress these in a safe space where mistakes can be made. Learners reflect and receive direct feedback that they carry into the workplace and progress is tracked.
