We have had the pleasure to partner with Skills Builder Partnership to deliver our very first Work Insights Week (WIW) at the RSSB offices in Central London.
The WIW was designed for 16- to 18-year-olds and set out to deliver three main components and objectives over one week. One, introduction to the essential skills and the opportunity to develop and hone these skills throughout the week. Two, experience the railway industry and a real working environment through carefully curated project briefs; and three, a bespoke career advice and guidance session to give students the opportunity to learn about railway careers and wider employability requirements.
We were able to deliver social impact worth over £27k (calculated with the RSVT). Undoubtedly, having Skills Builder Partnership’s professional guidance and support in the planning and execution of the WIW was a key component to its success and the incredible impact.

To move from a traditional shadowing style work experience to a modern work experience approach that focuses on developing essential skills and gives students the opportunity to explore a wider range of roles at the company.
To consistently build essential skills into outreach activities so that students will be better able to make connections between different job roles and companies in rail.
An average increase of at least 2 skill steps in each skill over the course of the week.
The proportion of students who understood which essential skills are important in rail more than doubled.
100% of participants would recommend the programme to a friend.
The Skills Builder Excellence Standards set clear guidelines for best practice across a business or team.
Business or teams who achieve these indicators work towards achieving an Excellence Mark accreditation.
The Outreach Excellence Standards are outlined below.
The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) is a leading organisation in safety, standards, research and sustainability across an evolving rail network.
RSSB provides technical support and facilitates engagement to its members and the wider rail industry, encouraging best practice, informed decision making, reduction in costs and supporting freight growth.
RSSB also leads in sustainability, through their Sustainable Rail Blueprint (SRB); a blueprint co-created by the industry, for the industry. The SRB outlines 11 flagship goals, each having its own roadmap, ensuring successful performance and delivery.
