Context
We're a comparitively small school, however we specialise in Computing, Health and Sport as well as the standard GCSEs and A-Levels. We got involved to help promote the necessary skills for College and beyond.
Overall impact
I have found it has been really helpful, it has given us ideas in how to better implement these skills in-lesson.
Keep it simple
Staff can reward students with reward points for completing a task or activity that demonstrates a particular skill. Students recieve prizes at the end of each term, including rewards relating to the use of essential skills.
Start early, keep going
All year groups (Y9-Y13) use the skills as part of their lessons and study around the school. Parents often receive phone calls home regarding their child's use of the skills.
Measure it
Using Class Charts to reard students has given us a clear, direct metric over what skills are being utilised, by who and when. We've been able to see exactly where we need to focus in the future.
Focus tightly
Each week, students are given the opportunity to reflect on their use of a specific skill that week and note it down in their planner. Later in the week, during their time using computers, they then enter these details (and any others) into UniFrog.
Keep practising
We aim to implement these skills as keywords in various lessons and extra-curricular content that we do. Although we don't focus on this, we use it as the students are familiar with the benefits of these skills.
Bring it to life
We have had various employer engagement sessions, in which employers have mentioned the skills as key requirements (without instruction from us), really cementing the idea to the students.
What's next
Build off of the work we have done this year, make sure we follow it again next year, and then see how we can improve it.
