Keep it simple
Essential skills are embedded across school life, reflecting our strive towards Flagship status. Regular assemblies highlight the skill focus for the term, and skill icons, steps, and employer descriptors are displayed in every classroom and planners. A prominent Skills Builder display in the main foyer reinforces visibility and consistency.
The language of essential skills is widely used by students and staff. Year 11s apply this in mock interviews, aligned with the Stoke & Staffordshire Careers Hub framework. Skills are written into the PSHE and careers curriculum, and weekly tutor-time reflections contribute to the reward system, with half-termly recognition for skill development. These achievements are celebrated in an end-of-year assembly.
Parental engagement is supported through Home zone links and newsletters. Ongoing feedback from students, teachers, and external partners ensures the programme remains relevant. Student voice and data show increased confidence in recognising and discussing their skills.
Real-world application is supported through guest speakers, workshops, and workplace visits. Partnerships with local employers deepen understanding of workplace expectations. Moving forward, we plan to expand industry links and integrating further digital tools to support skill tracking, ensuring students are equipped for future success.
