Context
Blowers Green Primary School is a one-form entry school in Dudley, providing education for children from Nursery through to Year 6. As a school at the heart of our local community, we serve children aged 3–11 and offer a dedicated Nursery provision to give our youngest learners the best possible start to their educational journey. As part of Dudley Academies Trust since February 2020, we build on a proud history of serving the local area since 1936. Over many years, the school has developed a strong reputation for educational excellence and positive community relationships. Our vision is to provide an ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich education where every child can thrive academically, socially and emotionally, regardless of their starting point. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education and have the confidence, skills and values needed to become positive contributors to their community. Blowers Green serves a diverse community, and we pride ourselves on our strong ethos of inclusion, high expectations and aspiration for every child. We believe that all children can succeed and work hard to remove barriers to learning, ensuring that pupils are supported in their academic, personal and social development. Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, challenging and meaningful, fostering curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. Through high-quality teaching, strong pastoral support and a nurturing learning environment, we strive to ensure that every child feels valued, achieves their full potential and develops into a successful, well-rounded individual.
Overall impact
At Blowers Green Primary School, the Essential Skills programme has become an integral part of our curriculum and wider school culture. Initially, we focused on the skills of Speaking and Listening, as this complemented our existing work with Voice 21 Oracy and our commitment to developing confident communicators. Skills Builder has enhanced and strengthened the strategies already in place to promote high-quality talk, discussion and presentation skills across the school. Children are becoming increasingly confident in identifying, discussing and demonstrating essential skills in a range of contexts. They are able to recognise how these skills support their learning and personal development, and they regularly apply them across the curriculum, during educational visits, in after-school clubs and through team sporting events. The language of Essential Skills is now embedded throughout school and is helping children to become more reflective, resilient and independent learners.

Start early, keep going
Essential Skills icons are displayed prominently throughout the school, including in every classroom and within the main school hall. This ensures that the skills remain visible and accessible to both pupils and staff throughout the day. Teachers make regular reference to the skills during lessons, helping children to recognise the skills they are using and developing within different areas of learning. Children are encouraged to use the associated vocabulary when discussing their learning and reflecting on their achievements. The development of essential skills begins from the earliest years and continues throughout a child's journey at Blowers Green. Skills are introduced in an age-appropriate way and revisited regularly so that children continuously build on their understanding and application. Alongside our Voice 21 approach, we have established Oracy Champions who promote effective communication and support the school's focus on developing Speaking and Listening skills. This ensures that children encounter a consistent language and approach to skill development as they move through the school.
Measure it
Teachers monitor children's development of the Essential Skills through classroom discussions, observation and opportunities for reflection. Children are encouraged to consider which skills they have used successfully and identify areas they would like to strengthen further. The Skills Builder framework provides a clear progression model, enabling staff to support children in taking small, achievable steps towards mastering each skill.
Focus tightly
While the language of all eight Essential Skills has been embedded across the curriculum, our initial focus on Speaking and Listening has allowed us to align the programme closely with our whole-school oracy priorities. Skills Builder lesson resources have been used across year groups to explicitly teach and reinforce these skills. Staff carefully plan opportunities for pupils to practise and apply them within meaningful learning contexts, ensuring that children understand not only what the skills are but also why they are important.
Keep practising
Children regularly apply Essential Skills through a wide range of experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Skills are developed through collaborative learning, presentations, problem-solving activities and structured discussion. Beyond the curriculum, children have opportunities to practise these skills during educational visits, extracurricular clubs, sporting competitions and wider enrichment activities. These experiences allow pupils to transfer and strengthen their skills in real-life situations.
Bring it to life
The language of Essential Skills is woven through many aspects of school life. For example, children develop their 'Leadership skills' through a variety of responsibilities and roles. We have school prefects, a Junior Leadership Team, Oracy Champions and a range of classroom responsibilities that ensure every child has the opportunity to contribute to the life of the school. By connecting Essential Skills to authentic leadership opportunities, children gain a deeper understanding of the skills required in future education, employment and community life. They are encouraged to reflect on how skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and problem solving can support them both now and in the future.
What's next
As we move towards the end of the academic year, we will be making use of the Skills Builder transition activities to support children as they prepare for the next stage of their educational journey. These activities will provide valuable opportunities for pupils to reflect on the skills they have developed and consider how they can continue to build upon them in their new classes and year groups. We also plan to promote the Skills Builder Home Challenges through our school newsletter. By sharing these activities with families, we aim to provide children with opportunities to continue developing and practising their essential skills during the school holidays. These challenges will encourage meaningful conversations and collaborative activities at home, helping to strengthen the partnership between school and families while reinforcing the importance of essential skills in everyday life. Looking ahead, we will continue to embed the language and principles of Skills Builder across a
