Preparing young people for the world of work is one of the most crucial parts of education. When we look beyond the curriculum and focus on building core essential skills like Teamwork, Communication and Problem Solving, we are equipping students to thrive in any environment they choose. By making these skills a priority, we bridge the gap between classroom learning and future career fulfillment, ensuring that every student steps into the future with confidence.
In the third of our Accelerator webinar series, we focused on ‘The Applied Curriculum’, exploring how schools and colleges can seamlessly connect work experience and careers directly to essential skill development. Here are the key takeaways and tools shared during the session to help your setting prepare students for what comes next.
Key insights for transforming careers education
- Life-changing, proven impact: Data from the annual Essential Skills Trackers shows that individuals with higher essential skills are 25 - 50% less likely to be out of education or employment. Furthermore, these skills can yield a wage premium of up to £4,600 per year, significantly support mental wellbeing, and even help compensate for lower traditional academic outcomes.
- A scale that speaks for itself: Over 1.4 million skill-building opportunities have already been delivered across more than 1,000 UK schools and colleges. This effort is backed by over 700 employer partners - including major global companies like Amazon and Heathrow - who recognise the value of these skills in the modern workplace.
- Seamlessly aligned with national standards: Integrating essential skills won't create extra administration for your staff. The Universal Framework is already embedded into statutory careers guidance, the Gatsby Benchmarks and key Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) documents, helping you meet your existing requirements more effectively.
- Practical tools ready for the classroom: We don't just provide a Framework - we provide the exact tools to put it into practice. This includes the Careers Explorer Tool, an online database featuring over 1,000 jobs that allows students to see and compare the precise skill profiles needed for different roles. Educators also have access to toolkits designed to guide students through benchmarking their skills, setting SMART goals, logging daily reflections during work experience and preparing for mock interviews.
